Surfing South Sri Lanka: Weligama, Ahangama and Mirissa Guide
The complete south coast walkthrough: every named break from Weligama Bay to Mirissa, when to surf each, and how to read the season.
Sri Lanka's south coast surf-school capital. Sandy beach breaks at Kabalana, friendly reef points at Plantations, and a 20-kilometre cluster of named breaks from November to April.
Ahangama is the friendliest stretch of Sri Lanka's south coast: a 20-kilometre cluster of named breaks running from Kabalana to Midigama, soft-bottom inside sections that make first-time lineups feel manageable, and a tuk-tuk infrastructure that gets you to the right peak in five minutes.
It is the south coast's surf-school capital. Calmer than Arugam Bay on the east, deeper-water than Weligama Bay next door, and structured around camps that run video review every afternoon. The season runs November to April when the south swell wraps in clean and the trade winds drop off late morning. Sundays you will see soft-board lessons stretched across the dune line at Kabalana while reef-point regulars paddle out at Plantations.
Soft-board mornings at Kabalana, sunset hoppers at the kade, and an offshore rocky island that breaks the worst of the swell.
This hub covers the spots, the camp, the seasons, and how to get here. For the full surf-side picture, see our south coast guide.

November to April. The cleanest swells run January to March when the south Indian Ocean lights up and the morning trade winds stay light until late morning. Avoid May to October, when the south coast is rainy and the surf season moves to the east coast (Arugam Bay).
