Surfing Arugam Bay: Sri Lanka's East Coast Wave Capital
Every named break, the local etiquette, and the rhythm of a Bay morning: paddle out at Main Point at first light, breakfast at the kade, push to Whiskey by mid-morning.
Sri Lanka's east coast surf town. Five named points within 10 kilometres of tuk-tuk: Main Point, Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, Elephant Rock, Pottuvil Point. April to October, water 28 °C, peak July to August.
Arugam Bay is the easiest serious surf trip in Asia: a village of guest houses and surf cafés on the east coast of Sri Lanka, five named breaks within 10 kilometres of tuk-tuk, water that never drops below 28 °C, and a riding-to-the-peak culture that makes a four-session day feel manageable.
It is rawer than the south coast. Where Ahangama is built around schools and sand-bottom inside sections, the Bay leans intermediate. Main Point is the village classroom, a reef-point right that runs 300 to 500 metres on a good day, and Whiskey, Peanut Farm, Elephant Rock and Pottuvil Point sit within a 15-minute tuk-tuk arc. The season is April to October, peak July and August when the south Indian Ocean swells push north into clean lined-up days.
Tuk-tuks to Main Point at dawn, fresh juice at the kade, and a wild elephant on the road back to Pottuvil.
This hub covers the spots, the camp, the seasons, and how to plan the trip. For the full east coast picture, see our Arugam Bay surf guide.

Two coasts, two seasons, the same island. Why first-time visitors should choose Arugam in summer and Ahangama in winter.

The crossover weeks at the end of April and early October are short. The Bay runs warm and crowd-friendly in shoulder season, and overhead lined up in peak July to August.
Bandaranaike Colombo (CMB), seven hours by car via the central highlands. Most travellers split the drive with a night in Ella. Mattala (HRI) is closer at four hours but international flights are limited.
Wanderlust Surf Camp runs intermediate-leaning coaching with two daily lessons, video review, and a small student-to-instructor ratio. The Bay leans intermediate; first-time surfers do better on the south coast in winter.
Devilled prawns at the harbour cafés, kottu roti at midnight, fresh juice at every kade, fish ambul thiyal from coastal villages. The east coast eats simpler and spicier than the south.
From €329 / 4 nights at Wanderlust Surf Camp. King coconut at the kade: €0.80. Tuk-tuk to Whiskey Point: €2 to €3 per ride.
Wanderlust Surf Camp, walking distance to Main Point. Real prices, packages, live availability for the east coast season.
See Arugam Bay Surf CampsLess than Ahangama. Main Point is a reef-point right that breaks chest to overhead and has a busy lineup all summer. First-time surfers do better in winter on the south coast where the inside sections are sand-bottom. If you arrive in Arugam as a beginner, expect short sessions on the small-day inside at Baby Point and patience with a coach.
April to October. May and June for warmth and the season build. July and August for peak swell, lined-up days, and a full village. September and October for cleaner conditions and thinner crowds. October closes out the east coast season; November opens the south.
Tuk-tuks. Main Point is walking distance from town. Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Elephant Rock are five to fifteen minute tuk-tuk rides for 200 to 500 rupees per ride. Every camp has a regular driver who takes guests to the morning peak before sunrise and waits with the boards while you eat breakfast.
It is long but not difficult. Seven hours by private car via the central highlands. The smartest version is to split it: one night in Ella with the highland train ride, dinner with the tea-country view, then four hours down to the coast in the morning. Mattala airport (HRI) cuts the drive to four hours but has limited flights.
Yala National Park (two hours south for leopards). Kumana National Park (45 minutes north for birds). The inland temples at Buduruwagala. The elephant corridor between Pottuvil and Panama at dusk; every camp has a driver who knows where the herd is moving that week.

Sri Lanka's south coast surf-school capital. Sandy beach breaks at Kabalana, friendly reef points at Plantations, and a 20-kilometre cluster of named breaks from November to April.

South Sri Lanka's surf hub: a 2 km horseshoe bay, beginner-friendly beach break, nine spots within tuk-tuk range.

Canggu is Bali's most social, most year-round surf town. 5 named breaks, walking distance everything, 3 of 4 Waverick partner camps. The Saturday at Old Man's tradition.
