Weligama is south Sri Lanka's surf hub: a 2 km horseshoe bay, a long beach break with sand-bottom forgiveness, and nine intermediate spots within tuk-tuk range. It is the easiest place in Asia to start surfing and stay.

Long, soft walls of whitewater at dawn. Hot kottu and a sunset beer on the sand by 7 pm.

The bay itself is the school. Reform after reform rolls in waist-high for beginners, while Plantation Point on the east end serves up cleaner shoulders for the second-week crowd. Drive 3 km west and you hit Midigama: faster, hollower, reef. Mirissa is 4 km south for whales and a different beach scene. The geography does the work, you just need a board and tuk-tuk fare.

Before you go

When to go

November to April is the south coast season: clean groundswell, light north-east offshore winds, dry days. May to September is the south-west monsoon, when the bay turns onshore and choppy. That is when the east coast (Arugam Bay, 7 hours away) fires.

Getting there

Fly into Colombo Bandaranaike (CMB), 155 km north. The E01 Southern Expressway gets you to Weligama in 2.5 hours by private transfer (around $60), or 4 hours by coastal train + tuk-tuk (under $5). Most surf camps include or arrange the transfer.

What it costs

From €290 / 7 nights at TS2 Weligama. Six-day surf weeks with a free Sunday, and the cheapest way into the operator's two-camp setup on the bay. Lunch in town: 800 LKR (around €2.50). King coconut: 200 LKR.

Moving around

Weligama Bay itself is walkable end to end in 30 minutes. Tuk-tuk to Midigama (3 km, 500 LKR), Mirissa (4 km, 800 LKR) or Ahangama (8 km, 1,200 LKR). Scooter rental is 1,500 to 2,500 LKR per day and needs an International Driving Permit.

What to eat

Kottu roti (chopped roti stir-fried with veg or chicken) at any beach shack, rice and curry at the small local spots for 600 LKR, devilled prawns at Sunset Sands by the bay. King coconut and pineapple for 200 LKR each. You will eat well for €15 a day.

Visa & practicalities

EU passports need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival: $50 USD, apply at eta.gov.lk, 24 to 48 hours processing. Dialog or Mobitel SIM at the airport gives you 25 GB of 4G for €5. Power: type D plug (3 round pins), bring an adapter.

FAQ

Weligama: common questions

Can you learn to surf in Weligama as a complete beginner?

Yes, this is one of the easiest places in Asia to start. The main bay break is a long, slow reform over sand, waist to chest high for most of the season. The two camps on the bay run twice-daily lessons with coaches at a 1:3 to 1:5 ratio, soft-tops included.

When is the best month to surf Weligama?

December to February for peak swell with the cleanest offshore winds. November and March are the sweet spot for fewer crowds with still-firing conditions. April is the tail end of the season: warm water, lighter swell, last week of clean days before the monsoon arrives. Full month-by-month breakdown in our best time to surf Sri Lanka guide.

How do I get from Colombo airport to Weligama?

Three options: private transfer (2.5 hours, around $60, what most surf camps arrange), the coastal train via Colombo Fort to Weligama station (3.5 to 4 hours, under $5 in 2nd class reserved, one of the world's great rail rides), or AC intercity bus (3.5 hours, around $2). Late-night arrivals are best served by a pre-booked transfer.

What about May to September, when the south coast is offshore?

Skip Weligama and fly across to Arugam Bay on the east coast, 7 hours by road from Colombo. That is when Sri Lanka's east coast season runs: Main Point, Peanut Farm, Whiskey Point, Elephant Rock. Same country, opposite season. Some Weligama operators close from June to August.

What surf spots are close to Weligama Bay?

Within 8 km: Plantation Point (east end of the bay, intermediate sand-and-reef), Midigama (3 km west, faster reef wall, intermediate-plus), Mirissa Beach (4 km south, beginner-friendly when the bay is crowded), Sticks and Lazy Left (5 km west, longer waiting period but quality intermediate). Coconut Tree Hill (Mirissa) is the famous photo spot, not a wave.

Do I need to bring a wetsuit?

No. Water sits at 27 to 29 °C year-round. Boardshorts and a rashie are enough, even at dawn. A 2 mm long-sleeve rashie helps with sun and a touch of chill in January at 6 am, but a full wetsuit is overkill.

Should I bring my own board or rent locally?

If you have your own setup and you are intermediate or better, bring it. The two camps stock 7'0 to 8'0 soft-tops for beginners and a few rental fish or shortboards, but selection is thin and rental quality is mixed. Surfboards travel on most airlines for around $50 each way, see our camp page for what is included.

Is Weligama safe for solo travellers?

Yes. Both surf camps on the bay book mostly solo travellers (60 to 70 percent), and the social model means you eat dinner with the crew every night. Locals are friendly and used to backpackers. Standard travel sense after dark: stick to the bay area, tuk-tuk back from town spots after 10 pm.

How much should I budget for a week?

Camp + surf coaching: €290 to €400 for a week at TS2 or The Surfer Beach Camp Weligama. Add €100 to €150 for food, drinks, tuk-tuks, a Mirissa whale-watching day. Flights from Europe: €500 to €1,000 return depending on season. A full week including flights typically lands at €900 to €1,500 from EU origins.

What else is there to do besides surf?

Whale watching from Mirissa (December to April, blue whales pass close to shore), Coconut Tree Hill at sunset, Galle Fort 30 minutes north-west (Dutch colonial city, walkable), the stilt fishermen at sunrise on Koggala beach (10 minutes east), Ayurveda massage anywhere on the strip for €10 to €15 an hour, and a tea-plantation overnight in Ella (3 hours inland on the famous Kandy-Ella train line).
