When is the best time to surf in Portugal?
March to October covers all levels. Beginners do best from June to September when the swell is smaller and the water is warmest (around 20°C). Experienced surfers prefer September through November when the Atlantic starts pushing proper swell. January and February get big, bring a 4/3 wetsuit and some confidence.
Do I need surfing experience?
No. Every camp on this page offers lessons for first-timers. Costa da Caparica is the best region for learning, long sandy beach breaks with gentle whitewater and shallow, forgiving bottoms. Santa Cruz and Figueira also have solid beginner-friendly spots. The Algarve works for beginners too, though intermediate surfers will get the most out of Arrifana’s reef break.
What’s the cheapest surf camp in Portugal?
Dorm beds start at €30/night at SURFinn Figueira da Foz, with breakfast included. SURFinn Algarve has dorms from €35/night in low and mid season. On the Lisbon coast, dorms start at €37/night (SURFinn Lisbon) or €61/night with half-board at Gota Dagua. Stoke Surf House in Santa Cruz starts at €64/night.
Can I just book a few nights?
Yes, minimum stays range from 2 nights (Stoke Surf House) to 4 nights (SURFinn Lisbon and Figueira). SURFinn Algarve and Gota Dagua Adult both have a 3-night minimum. The only exception is Gota Dagua Junior, which runs on fixed 7-night blocks (Saturday to Saturday).
Are meals included?
It depends on the camp. All camps include breakfast. Gota Dagua Adult adds 6 dinners per week. Gota Dagua Junior is full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks). SURFinn and Stoke are B&B, you can add meal packages as extras.

Do I need to bring my own equipment?
No. Every camp provides surfboards, either free or as a rental add-on (€10-15/night). Wetsuits are available at all locations. If you want to bring your own board, every camp has storage space.
How do I get to these surf camps from Lisbon airport?
Costa da Caparica is 20-30 minutes from Lisbon airport by car or Uber. Santa Cruz is about 50 minutes north. Figueira da Foz is a 2-hour drive or a direct train from Lisbon (Oriente station). SURFinn Algarve in Aljezur is about an hour from Faro airport. Most camps offer airport transfers as an add-on, check the camp page for prices.
