The country runs on cobblestone reef points. El Sunzal is the village classroom, a 500-metre right that breaks shoulder to overhead and holds size from March through October. Punta Roca next door is the heavy version, a fast right that the locals know by heart. K59, La Bocana, El Zonte, and Playa San Diego fill in the rest of the La Libertad arc. The east coast at Las Flores and Punta Mango is remoter, longer drive, more exposed swell.
Pupusas at the beachside comedor, a Land Cruiser taxi to Sunzal at first light, and a right that runs as long as your legs.
This hub maps the spots, the camp, the season, and how to plan the trip. The country is small, the lineup culture is friendly, and the airport-to-water transfer is the shortest in Central America.
San Salvador International (SAL), about 45 minutes by car to El Sunzal and the La Libertad coast. Direct flights from Miami, Houston, Madrid and Mexico City. Camp pickup is the easy default.
Laola Surf Camp runs structured one-to-one coaching at El Sunzal point break. Daily video review, board quiver included, and a coach who lives at the lineup. Better for intermediate surfers stepping into point break than for first-timers.
Pupusas with curtido for breakfast, ceviche from the harbour cafés, mariscada seafood soup, fresh fish a la plancha, coconut water straight from the cart. The national dish is the pupusa: a thick corn tortilla with bean, cheese, or pork inside.
From €980 / 7 nights at Laola Surf Camp El Sunzal. Pupusas at the beachside comedor: $1 each. Airport pickup from SAL: $30 per car. El Salvador uses the US dollar.
Laola Surf Camp at El Sunzal point break. Real prices, packages, live availability for the Pacific Coast season.
See El Salvador Surf CampsLess than the south coast of Sri Lanka or Canggu Bali. The signature breaks (El Sunzal, Punta Roca, K59) are cobblestone reef points that work best from shoulder height up. Beginners do better at the Sunzalito inside section on small days or at the sand-bottom beach breaks like Playa San Diego. If you arrive new to surfing, expect short sessions on the inside with a coach and patience as you read the cobblestone reef.
March to October. April through June for warmth and a building south swell. July and August for peak season: head-high to overhead point breaks at El Sunzal and Punta Roca. September and October for cleaner conditions and thinner crowds. November to February is the off-season but still rideable on smaller days, water stays warm year-round.
The La Libertad surf coast (El Sunzal, El Tunco, El Zonte, Punta Roca) is well-trodden surf-tourism territory, with camp pickups from the airport and active local presence on the beach. The country's crime situation has dropped significantly since 2022, and the surf corridor is one of the safest stretches. Take normal precautions: don't carry valuables on the beach, use camp transport for night moves, stick to busier breaks if surfing solo.
Fly into San Salvador International (SAL): direct from Miami (2 hrs), Houston (3 hrs), Mexico City (2 hrs), and seasonal from Madrid. The drive from SAL to El Sunzal is about 45 minutes via the Carretera del Litoral coastal highway. Every camp arranges airport pickup; the standard rate is around $30 per car.
Volcán Santa Ana (a 2-hour drive inland, with guided summit hikes most weekends). The Ruta de las Flores coffee country in the western highlands. Joya de Cerén Maya ruins (the Pompeii of Mesoamerica). Whale and dolphin watching from Los Cóbanos. Most camps run a flat-day excursion menu; ask on arrival.
