Essaouira (ESU)
An UNESCO walled medina, the Atlantic crashing on its ramparts, and one of Morocco's best kitesurf zones in the same town. Locals call it the Wind City: 300+ blowing days a year, with Mogador island offshore breaking the worst of the swell. Surf camps cluster 25 km south at Sidi Kaouki; kitesurf rigs stay closer to town.
Two seasons, one town: surf the dawn glass, kite the trade-wind afternoons. Few places give you both.

Before you go

Best time to go

Surf: Nov to Mar. Winter swells, water 16-18 °C, 3/2 mm wetsuit, light winds at dawn. Kite: Apr to Oct, peaking Jun-Sep with 18-30 knot trades. Crossover months (Mar-Apr, Oct-Nov) are the sweet spot. The Gnaoua festival lands in the medina every June.

Getting here

Essaouira-Mogador airport (ESU) takes direct flights from Paris, London Stansted, and Brussels. From Marrakech: Supratours or CTM bus, around 3 hours, 75 MAD (~10 EUR). Private transfer 700-1,000 MAD. Sidi Kaouki is a 30-minute taxi south of town.

What it costs

From €237 / 3 nights at Holy Surf Camp. Argan oil from the cooperative: €8 / 250 ml.

Things to know

The medina is car-free, walkable, and quieter than Marrakech. Cover shoulders in the souk; carry small dirham notes. The fishing port grills the day's catch on the harbour wall, the row of blue boats is your photo. Mogador island sits offshore but is a protected nature reserve, no public access. Gnaoua music plays in riads year-round; the festival is June.

FAQ

Essaouira: common questions

Can you surf in Essaouira?
Yes. The main camps are in Sidi Kaouki, 25 km south, where the beach break is sandy and forgiving. Essaouira's own beach gets too windy for clean surf in summer but works in winter. See our surf camps comparison.
Is Essaouira good for kitesurfing?
One of the best spots in Morocco. Trade winds blow consistently April to October (18-30 knots in peak summer), with a dedicated kite zone and flat-water options for beginners. Read the kitesurf guide for spots and the school.
How far is Essaouira from Marrakech?
About 180 km, or 2.5-3 hours by road. The bus runs several times a day for around 10 EUR. A shared taxi (grand taxi) is faster (2.5 hours) but less comfortable. Most surf camps arrange transfers from Marrakech, Essaouira, or Agadir airports.
Surf camps in Essaouira city or Sidi Kaouki?
Sidi Kaouki. The waves are more consistent, the wind less aggressive, and the village quieter. Three year-round camps operate there: Holy Beach House, Holy Surf Camp, and Surf Les Vagues. Le Hameau des Cascades, 35 km south inland, is a separate Berber-retreat option.
Can I do both surf and kite on the same trip?
Yes - and Essaouira is one of the few Moroccan spots where this works well. Surf in Sidi Kaouki in the morning before the wind picks up, then taxi to Essaouira for an afternoon kite session. September and October are the best months for the combo.
Do I need a wetsuit?
Yes, year-round. A 4/3 mm in winter (November-March), a 3/2 mm in shoulder months, a shorty or 3/2 mm in summer. Water ranges from 16-22 °C depending on the season.
What can I do in Essaouira besides surf?
Plenty. Wander the UNESCO medina (walled, car-free, way more relaxed than Marrakech). Eat fish grilled at the port. Take a hammam. Catch a Gnaoua jam in a riad. Drive 15 minutes for argan-oil cooperatives, 30 minutes south for the dunes near Sidi Kaouki. The Gnaoua World Music Festival lands in June if you can time it.
What board should I bring or rent?
Camps rent everything. As a guide: beginners want a 7-9 ft foam board, intermediates a 7-8 ft mini-mal, advanced surfers a shortboard or fish for Sidi Kaouki's reef. Wetsuit: 3/2 mm Nov-Mar, 2 mm shorty May-Sep. For a 1-week trip, rentals at 5-10 EUR per day usually beat hauling a board through Marrakech transit.
Where should I eat in Essaouira?
Harbour fish grills for lunch, point to a fish, they grill it, around 50-80 MAD. Taros for sunset rooftop drinks. La Table by Madada for a proper dinner. Pasta Baladin for a break from tagine. Mint tea in Place Moulay Hassan watching the seagulls work the fishermen.
Are there other surf spots near Essaouira?
A few. Moulay Bouzerktoun is 25 km north, top-tier kitesurf and a fast right-hand point break for advanced surfers only. Cap Sim and Tafedna sit further south, less consistent but quieter. Sidi Kaouki itself has multiple peaks for different levels.
