Twenty-six atolls, dozens of named breaks. Some are 90 minutes from the airport with five charter boats out front, others are a hour-long boat ride beyond and you’ll share them with three people. Here’s the reef-by-reef rundown by atoll.
This is where most boats and most surfers end up. It’s a 90-minute speedboat from Malé airport and sits in the middle of the dominant southwest swell window.
Cokes is the headline right. Fast, hollow, demanding take-off, head-high to overhead. Sometimes called the most photographed wave in the Maldives.
Chickens is the left across the channel. Longer, more makeable, mellower than Cokes, intermediate-friendly when small. Tucked next to Thulusdhoo island.
Sultans sits at Thanburudhoo. A long, walling right with multiple sections, best on bigger swells. Generally considered the most consistent quality break in the Maldives.
Honkys is the left at the same atoll. Less crowded than Sultans, longer rides, faster.
Jails is a powerful right reachable from local-island guesthouses on Himmafushi.
A 2–3 hour boat from Malé. Less crowded because most charters stay north.
Pasta Point at Cinnamon Dhonveli is the famous left — long, mechanical, perfect for goofy-footers. Guest-only break (you have to stay at the resort to surf it). Generally considered intermediate-friendly when waist-to-head-high.
Kandooma Right is another resort wave — fast hollow right, sometimes called the Snickers because it’s so consistent.
Foxys (Foxhole) is a punchy right reachable by boat from Guraidhoo.
Felidhoo, Vaavu, Meemu, Thaa. A 3–5 hour boat ride from Malé. Fewer crowds, more exploring.
Foamy (Vaavu) is a long mellow left, great for longboarders.
Veyvah Lefts (Meemu) deliver punchy walls on a clean reef. Charter access mostly.
Mikado (Thaa) is a steep right reef that holds size when the bigger swells fire.
The frontier. Domestic flights instead of all-day boat rides.
Yin Yang in Laamu is a hollow right and a punchy left at the same spot, around the Six Senses resort. Charter and resort access.
Antiques (Reef Top), also in Laamu, is a long-walling left around Six Senses.
Hadigilla in Dhaalu, off Kudahuvadhoo, is regularly described as the longest left in the country. Three-minute rides during south-east swells, around 10 sections including barreling sections. Reachable from a local-island guesthouse, walking distance from the airport. Oceana Inn Maldives is the only Waverick partner camp on this wave.
If you want the famous lineups and you’re charter-budget: North Male, no question. If you want emptier waves and longer trips: Central or Outer Atolls. If you want to fly in, walk to the beach, and surf one of the longest lefts in the country: Dhaalu.
